To me, one of the most upsetting fairy tales that I heard as a child was Hansel and Gretel, not for the child eating witch who lived in a candy house (I always wanted a candy house), but because of the parents who selfishly abandoned their children. In most versions, I think, it is the step-mother who instigates the plan, and the meek father acquiesces, sending his son and daughter out to die in the forest.

After hearing that story, I was just glad that my family wasn't interested in camping! (And that my parents weren't monsters.)

The theme for October is bone chilling tales. What fairy tales or myths make your skin crawl? What stories are just so creepy that you can't figure out how anyone would read them to their children? Who are the most vile villains that you love to hate?

Feel free to post pictures/art/graphics that go with the theme, too!

Please tag your entries for the theme posts (use theme: name of theme), but don't worry if you don't. Periodically I'll go through and fix/add tags when needed.

Have fun!
I hope intro posts are ok.

My name is Allison, and I've had an obsession with fairy tales (and pretty much all fantasy and horror books) since I was a kid. Like the two lovely mods, my favorite fairy tale is also Little Red Riding Hood. I even have a Little Red Riding Hood costume planned for Halloween, with my boyfriend acting as my Big Bad Wolf!

Some of my favorite authors of "modern" fairy tale authors include Tanith Lee (Blood Red, Or Tales From The Sisters Grimmer is a great collection), Neil Gaiman, Charles de Lint, and the Fairy Tales Anthologies, edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling. I'm hoping to get started on The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter as soon as I get it in the mail.

Some other fairy tales I like are The Seven Ravens, Donkeyskin, East Of The Sun West Of The Moon, and Snow White and Rose Red.

A little about my self: I am 24 years old, and live in my own fairy tale world. I read a lot of books, listen to music, sleep, and hang out with my boyfriend and my cat.

Hey guys! xeliara and I decided that it might be neat to do monthly themes to make things a little more fun.

This post is for you to post your theme suggestions for any month. You can suggest more than one theme if you'd like and they don't have to all be things like "creepy fairy tales" or "romantic myths." Feel free to suggest a certain fairy tale or myth as a monthly theme, or maybe a theme related to media inspired by fairy tales/folklore/etc. Be creative!

If you don't think we should do themes, let us know that, too. It'll help us in our final decision about whether to have them or not.

We can't wait to hear your ideas! ♥

PS: Remember, you guys can go ahead and start posting whatever you'd like! Posts don't have to relate to the theme of the month. :)

Hi! I'm Renee, and I'm one of the creators of the community. xeliara told me that she was looking for a community that focused on fairy tales and mythology, but she couldn't find one that she liked, so I suggested we create one. And voila! Here we are. :D

I adore fairy tales, and my favorite is Little Red Riding Hood. I also adore Celtic and Greek mythology, with my favorite Celtic legend being Tam-Lin and my favorite Greek myths being the ones about Hades/Persephone and Eros/Psyche.

Sometimes I like to write poems or stories inspired by fairy tales, but mostly I like to plan out "twisted" fairy tale stories with a few of my friends (which is basically THROW IN WEREWOLVES).

Anyways, I hope that you all enjoy this community! I'm excited about it! ♥

So, hi there. I'm Miranda and I'm one of the creators of this community. I wanted a place to talk about fairy tales and mythology and I was saddened that I couldn't really find many communities for that, so the result is this one here :D

I absolutely adore fairy tales and myths. I'm particularly interested in Norse and (lately) Greek mythology; the whole idea of Valhalla, Ragnarok and the valkyries seems to be very inspirational and influential for my own writing lol. My favourite fairy tale is...well, it's a fight between Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella, although I think LRRH just-say comes out on top lol.

As for me, I'm a 20 year old girl from the UK, I write stories, I weep at how I can't write cool, fairy tale-like things, and I play video games. So, that's me :D Hi.
